To my dear friend Ibrahim Nasrallah,
Greetings from Jerusalem — as if you live among us, placing your hand on our pain and concerns. What is also remarkable is that you write about a time we are still living through. You have made the right choice in deciding to write The Palestinian Comedy from many different perspectives. Before long, you will be a pioneer in this field, and your successive novels will serve as a contemporary epic of the Palestinian people, within a constantly renewed artistic framework.
In your novel A’ras Amina (Safe Weddings), you chose a difficult theme — death and martyrdom — a subject that tempts one toward lamentation, weeping, wailing, and melodrama. Yet, you skillfully avoided all that, and instead delved deep into the Palestinian condition that lies between joy and sorrow, wedding and funeral. You engaged in a profound and intelligent dialogue with death, illuminating a new facet of the Palestinian experience. Your novel progresses smoothly and powerfully, and giving women the lead roles and the voice of narration added charm and brilliance to the story: Rand, Lamis, Amina, the grandmother, and the two angels — all unforgettable characters.
Similarly, in Under the Noon Sun, you succeeded in portraying the crisis of this ambiguous stage, capturing the character of the Doctor — a masked calamity — in a way that cannot be forgotten. Nor can we forget the two children, Nimer and No'man, or Umm al-Waleed, Noura, Naeem, Yaseen, Saleem, and the Doctor. And then there is Warda — a delightful and rich female character.
You speak about us in a captivating style and see us in a beautiful and truthful way. I believe you are completing what Ghassan Kanafani could not finish, and I wish you a long life to complete your great literary project.
